Description
In a city known for its spectacular architecture and storied history, it should come as no surprise that The Hoxton Rome, the tenth hotel in The Hoxton portfolio, was designed as a tribute to its surroundings. The Hoxton hotels are known for breathing new life into spaces – one of the most memorable being the transformation of a car park into a hotel in London’s East End – and this one is no different, having been revamped by LA- and London-based design studio Fettle together with Ennismore Design Studio.
Originally constructed in the seventies, the hotel shares the neighbourhood with other similar buildings that feature classic architectural details. As such, the locality was an important design reference point for the hotel’s interiors.
Says Andy Goodwin, the creative director and co-founder of Fettle: “We had to ensure that we created a space that worked for both the surrounding community as well as hotel guests, so understanding the local culture played a huge part of the design process. We took inspiration from the location as well as cues from the building’s original details.”
The Hoxton brand celebrates an “open-house” concept, inviting guests and locals alike to mingle, so warm and welcoming communal spaces were an important focal point. Fettle created a series of open spaces that were both intimate in scale and seamless in spatial flow, so that guests would feel at home while moving freely from one place to another.
These include the lobby, Cugino café bar and terrace, and The Apartment, which houses the hotel’s meeting rooms and break out spaces. A variety of seating arrangements caters for socialising, working and relaxing needs, while carefully-curated accessories and lighting add to the feeling of lounging in a friend’s home.
Why book? The Hoxton Rome is the most stylish new hangout in Rome’s Parioli—an upscale district brimming with good food and art and culture. Since its opening, its restaurant and cocktail bar Cugino has drawn Rome’s coolest local crowd. The mid-century inspired design is a refreshing change of pace for Rome, at an affordable price.
Set the scene. This the U.K. hotel brand The Hoxton’s 10th property and first in Italy, and like all Hoxtons, the design is immaculate. The rustic parquet floors gleam beneath statements sofas, and marble tabletops hold perfectly placed vintage lamps. Globetrotting media types sip espressos while working at their laptops on the shaded outdoor terrace.
The backstory London-based Ennismore Design Studio have impressively transformed a 1970s modernist space into a Hoxton, leaving the dusky pink façade and and creating a big, expansive, light-filled lobby and a communal outdoor space. Furnishings are from local vintage markets, while tabletops and bar fronts are adorned with local marble.
The rooms The Hoxton’s 192 bedrooms come with names like Shoebox, Cozy Up, Roomy Terrace and Biggy. Inside, design inspiration comes from classic cinema, with rustic parquet floors, lacquered timbers and local stones. There are bespoke statement headboards, and Murano glass chandeliers. Pro-tip: book the Roomy Terrace room, which comes with a suntrap of a balcony.
Food and drink Don’t miss the excellent aperitivo at Cugino, which offers a curated list of cocktails, served with housemade snacks (friggitelli quesadilla with smoked scamorza, wild black rice bowls). For something more substantial, head to The Beverly, The Hoxton’s farm-to-fork eatery. The brunch menu brings definite Cali vibes to Rome, with dishes including omelettes, French toast and breakfast burritos. Dinner leans more Italian (trofie pasta with pumpkin, veal chops with grissini breadcrumbs, pan fried vegetables). The menu has a map showing where the food is sourced from.
The neighborhood/area Upscale with large avenues, grand villas and plenty of greenery, Parioli’s the perfect place to retreat to after a day’s sightseeing. Contemporary galleries MACRO (Museum of Contemporary Art) and MAXXI (National Museum of 21st Century Art) are a short stroll from the hotel.
The service Smart, knowledgable and friendly without being obtrusive.
